Labour Party chieftain calls for Reduction in the Salaries of the National Assembly Members

AKURE—AGAINST the backdrop of criticism over the remunerations of members of the National Assembly, a Chieftain of the  Labour Party, LP, in Ondo State, Chief Olufemi Adekanmbi yesterday called for a drastic reduction in their remunerations in the interest of the nation’s economy.
Adekanmbi suggested that the monthly salaries of Senators and members of the House of Representatives should be trimmed down to N100, 000 and N75, 000 respectively.
Speaking while officially declaring his intention to represent the people of Owo/Ose Federal constituency at the National Assembly in Owo, Adekanmbi said if the claims made by Central Bank Governor
, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi on remunerations of federal lawmakers was genuine, their salaries should be reduced in the interest of the nation.
According to him, ”if salaries of people seeking elective positions are reduced, people who are imbued with sound ideas would come out to serve the people and not to enrich themselves as currently being experienced.”
Adekanmbi who noted that he was in the race to serve his people better, urged the people of Owo/Ose to vote for credible people that would bring dividends of democracy closer to the grassroots.
“I am not in the race because I want to enrich my pocket and that of my family members but to ensure that our people are given dividends of democracy. That is why the remunerations of political officer holders must be reduced to make sure that money is spent on constituency projects.
‘’If I have my way, I will suggest that the salaries of our senators should be reduced to N100, 000 while those in the House of Representatives should be paid N75, 000. This will reduce the rush among Nigerians for elective positions, only those who have genuine interest will come out to serve”.
He lamented that ‘the people of Owo/Ose are not currently well represented in the House of Representatives just as he assured them that once he is elected, he would use his connection to bring federal presence to the two local governments.
Adekanmbi promised to empower youths, artisans and market women if elected, saying, “Creation of jobs for youths is my ultimate dream, our youths deserve to be gainfully employed so that they can be useful for the community”
