Police Arrest Four in Connection with the Stolen DDC Machines

Four persons, suspected to have stolen Direct Data Capture Machines (DDCM) from the cargo terminal at Lagos Airport, were on Friday paraded by the police at the Murtala Muhammed Airport (MMA). Briefing newsmen, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the Airport Command, Mosses Onireti, said the four suspects were arrested on Friday.

He gave the names of the suspects as Suleiman Isa, who was arrested at Shasha and Mrs Sunmonu Modupe, arrested at 17, Samuel Street, Akowonjo. Sunmonu was a cleaner at the airport three years ago, under the employ of Emapo Cleaning Services.

According to him, Lawal Lateef was arrested at Jimoh Street, Shasha and Bamidele Joshua was arrested at Ogunrinde Street, Shasha.

He said they claimed they gave the equipment to one Yemi, a computer technician from the computer village.

“Efforts are being made to track him (Yemi) down, all suspects would be charged to court soon for conspiracy, stealing and unlawful entry into the airport.”

One of the suspects, Sunmonu claimed that: ‘When I saw INEC on the back of the laptop, and when the laptop upon opening displayed Federal Republic of Nigeria, they said they will wipe it off, but I decided to call Yemi, who works at the computer village, to come and operate it. Yemi opened it further and said he would take one to computer village and test it.”

Lateef, who claimed they transported the equipment to computer village with said he saw a patrol vehicle around the cargo area on the day they removed them, but hid for the officers to pass before making his way into the terminal.

“There is a fence there, but there are also roads and entrances where people pass through. I came in through the area as I saw the cargo covered with nylon,” Lateef said.

Some armed men had reportedly carted away the machines at the cargo shed area of the Nigerian Aviation Handling Company (NAHCO), after they were offloaded from a Saudi Air plane at about 4.00 a.m. on Monday.
